Supplements are a controversial subject among CR practitioners. Some people avoid them altogether, and prefer to try to get all nutrients from food. But many others use supplements to make up for potential deficits due to CR or other aspects of their diet (e.g. low salt, high fiber, veganism, etc.) or as insurance against adverse health conditions that some think *may* be associated w/ CR (e.g. osteoporosis, anemia).

The pretty carefully thought out and documented supplement regime of one long-time CRON practitioner (Dean) is outlined in this post and the associated web page to which it points.

[The following was posted on behalf of Dean]

For anyone interested, I've updated my supplement regime, as
described here to reflect two substantial changes:

1) I've gone (or will go shortly, when my whey protein runs out)
strictly vegan for ethical/environmental reasons. My new supplement
regime reflects what I've learned about potential deficiencies
associated with a vegan diet. I've labeled a number of the
supplements I'm now taking as LIVD, which stands for "Low In Vegan
Diet". These are supplements I take specifically to make up for
potential deficiencies resulting from not eating animal products.

2) I've restructured the way I incorporate my supplements into my
daily regime. Formerly, in order to minimize pill count and better
control dosage, I was pulverizing 60 days worth of the supplements
I take and repacking them into homemade capsules - a rather arduous
task. I would then ingest these homemade capsules at the end of
each meal. It recently dawned on me (thanks to Kenton's helpful
suggestion) that another approach was possible. I could avoid the
re-encapsulating if I simply mixed my pulverized supplement powder
into the rather large amount of homemade salad dressing I make once
per week, and eat at every meal. See the web page for more details,
and motivation for this switch.

Yes, I know this is an unusual technique, and one that only works
for someone who eats the same thing (in the same amount) every day.
But it works for me!

I'm still interested to hear any evidence that premixing my
supplements with food (once per week in my salad dressing) will be
substantially worse along some dimension (absorption? potency?)
than mixing them together in my stomach at meal time.

Thanks!

--Dean
