This was a recent study detailing the specific mechanistic sequence seen in catalytic cycles of the Akt enyzme, an enzyme also known as "Protein Kinase B".

Of course, this particular enzyme has featured prominently in aging and oncology research, and the specific necessity of ATP seen in the early part of the mechanistic sequence calls attention to a potentially significant point of intersection between cellular bioenergetics and signal transduction.

"These results suggest that ATP is an initiating factor for the catalysis of AKT enzymes and may play a role in the regulation AKT enzyme activity in cells. " - J. Biol. Chem.
