|
|
This is a rather extreme experimental model, but, saved neurons are saved neurons.
Resveratrol adminstered in the context of cerebral ischemia saves neurons. This is interesting, and could potentially pave the way for an application in acute care contexts.
At any given time, it may help to have resveratrol "calling the shots" in your neurons and neurovasculature.
Particularly intriguing is the observation that NITRIC OXIDE is increased upon resveratrol administration. They mention that the vasodilation that is probably being mediated by NO could alleviate some of the problems being presented by the ischemia. In less pathological settings, nitric oxide could also be mediating benefits.

| "During cerebral ischemia, the hydroxyl radical levels were elevated in rats and animals displayed severe neuronal loss. A single dose of resveratrol significantly increased the nitric oxide level and decreased the hydroxyl radical level. The reduction of cerebral blood flow and neuronal loss were also attenuated by resveratrol treatment. The results demonstrated that a single infusion of resveratrol could elicit neuroprotective effects on cerebral ischemia-induced neuron damage through free radical scavenging and cerebral blood elevation due to NO release." - J.
