This is only a change in the "molecular signature" of heart failure, which is not exactly the same thing as preservation of myocardial function, but, this is the era of molecular medicine, and cardiac physiologists are much more confident of the contributing elements to cardiac decline than they used to be.

In keeping with this, there seems to be a pronounced shift towards anti-apoptosis that can been seen even with 16% CR over 2 months. However, even the authors admit that their findings may be only hinting at benefits, rather than "sealing the deal".

They also state that their findings lend credence to a "hormesis" perspective on CR, which simply means that CR is a kind of "stress resistance". Part of their enthusiasm in this regard may be attributable to the fact that even in the aged myocardium, a restoration towards "anti-apoptosis" may be seen. This implies that aging is not entirely "irreversible".
