This study is interesting, as it shows that Growth Hormone alone is not capable of sustaining cell proliferation at maximal levels. After a while, the signaling pathways that operate for the purposes of cell proliferation "become fatigued", and GH signaling becomes "desensitized" to GH.
However, introducing insulin can "resensitize" the signaling pathways and get cells dividing again.
The synergism here is important to acknowledge, as GH is thought to be elevated in situations where food is withdrawn. This could indicate that such elevations are not going to be exert the same effects as GH injected into someone in a nutrient-replete state.
