It has been said in the CRS archives before, but nutrient
needs go beyond the
macronutrients and the know vitamins and minerals. Getting
the RDA of all
known required nutrients is a means of attempting to derive
the "RDA" of the
other nutrients. Selenium is a micronutrient that can vary
much. In parts
of California that are irrigated in the Fresno Valley with
water from the
local mountains for repeated years, the locally fairly high
selenium becomes
concentrated over the years, as the water evaporates. Foods
can be
designated as being grown in California. But, overall,
having a greater
variety of foods that contain more of less of each known
nutrient and
unknown nutrient should pretty well ensure that the RDA of
all of the
nutrients are covered. Personal absorption rates are an
uncontrolled
variable, but random blood tests can identify in which of
the known
nutrients we are deficient. Then, supplement with that
nutrient, and do not
take along the way nutrients that are in oversupply. Orange
skin from too
much carotenoids may be unattractive. Some nutrients may
not be disposed of
in the body adequately to that exceeding the hormetic
optimum for that
nutrient. |
