Let's face it, caloric restriction is still very mysterious. It helps virtually all the organisms that get put on an INTELLIGENT reigmen of caloric restriction, but the exact manifestation of the benefit is often different for different beasts. For examples, fruit flies show "instanteous, complete lifespan prolongation". In other words, no accrued damage, they just instantly jump on the lifespan curve that the full-time CR flies are on!
However, other organisms show different patterns, and Masoro tries to resolve the discrepancies. It may be that caloric restriction is a form of "induced stress resistance" (sometimes called hormesis), superimposed on "generalized damage reduction" favored by the "wear and tear" proponents.
In any case, if you are ever near your local health library, it makes for an interesting read.

"It has long been held that food restriction extends the life span of rodents and other species by decreasing caloric intake and slowing the rate of aging. Recent findings challenge these concepts." - The Journals of Gerontology Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences 61:14-19 (2006) |
