|
|
This was an interesting finding recently published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Green Tea inhibits insulin secretion through inhibition of the enzyme glutamate dehydrogenase, which features prominently in the regulation of insulin secretion.
However, overabundance of amino acids in the extracellular environment may prevent green tea from exerting this effect. In any case, it would appear that there is much yet to understand about green tea.

Since green tea was suggested as a therapeutic
agent for the treatment of diabetes more than 70
years ago (23) and because of the role that GDH
plays in insulin secretion, the effects of green tea
catechins on GDH were tested in-vitro. As shown
in Figure 1, EGCG and ECG, but not EGC or EC,
are potent inhibitors of GDH activity with ED50’s
of ~300 nM. Since all four polyphenols have
comparable antioxidant activities (24), this
strongly suggests that EGCG and ECG effects are
allosteric in nature. This inhibition is also
reversible since dialysis of an EGCG/GDH
mixture completely alleviated the inhibition (data
not shown). |
