|

This is an interesting paper. Short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate are produced through fermentative processes in the gastrointestinal tract. What these scientists show is that these substances can really throw a "monkey wrench" into cancer cells, whereas normal cells seem largely unfazed.
A point worth stressing here is that these substances, short-chain fatty acids, and butyrate, are typically associated with certain types of dietary fiber. However, not all fiber produces them "as easily", which could help to explain the lack of benefit associated with certain studies that tried to get people eating more fiber.
Having said all of that, it may "difficult" to actually prevent colon cancer "in the real world" with this approach, but, for the moment, I still think its worth giving a chance.
