The study of the laminopathies is currently intesifying as scientists search for the way in which humans age. In one type of human progeria, it is found that the genetic mutation seems to target vascular cells, which indicates that these cells may be contributing to the "health phenotype" to a degree that is underappreciated.

"Strikingly, skin biopsy sections from a subject with HGPS showed that the truncated lamin A accumulates primarily in the nuclei of vascular cells. This finding suggests that accumulation of progerin is directly involved in vascular disease in progeria."
