"Maximum life span" in scientific studies is *usually*
defined to be the
mean life span of the most long-lived 10% decile of the
population. The
population size doesn't make any difference - except at
*very* small sizes.

I suppose it /is/ possible that these guys are using a
definition like
the one on:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_life_span

...instead - and intend their comment to refer to Jeanne
Calment's lifespan.

Exactly. So much for the "maximum life span potential
appears to have
already been achieved".
