The higher-protein diet can shorten lifespan regardless of the calories in the diet itself. However, less calories are still part of the overall picture of longer life.
This team is arguing that calories may be the only variable mediating lifespan, but their actual findings indicate that low protein diets seem to "ensure" longer life in flies. However, the way it does so may have no analog in higher mammals. It appears that flies on a low protein, high sugar diet seem to eat less total calories than flies on a high protein, low sugar diet, and that may be mediating the difference.
