This is an interesting new paper in Thorax from Massachusetts General Hospital, Southern Illinois and the CDC. It turns out leptin, a hormone made from fat cells, tends to promote the development of asthma.

Conclusions: The results of this large population-based study support the hypothesis that leptin is associated with asthma among women. In addition, while BMI also is related to asthma in women, this study does not support that leptin contributes much to this association. - Thorax, 15 March 2006
