This is a very interesting new finding being reported in the Journal of Biological Chemistry that indicates that caffeine is capable of inhibiting the "Target of Rapamacyin", or TOR enzyme. This enzyme promotes "general anabolism" as well as immunological activity, and has recently been implicated as being capable of "accelerating aging", as described in this previous experimentation.

The research community investigating the Target of Rapamycin has increased the level of sophistication of their discourse regarding this enzyme, and now speaks of a Target of Rapamycin "Complex", as there are now other proteins that facilitate the biological effects of the TOR enzyme.

In this study, the researchers evaluated the effects on caffeine on both the TOR Complex I as well Tor Complex II, and found that caffeine exerted a more pronounced inhibitory effect on TOR Complex I activity whereas an effect was not detected regarding TOR Complex II

What is interesting to me is that there is an interesting confluence of findings regarding caffeine that may indicate that this sort of molecular mechanism is contributing to some of the beneficial effects of caffeine. However, there are many that continue to find some negative effects of caffeine, and so, like many interventions, it may ultimately prove to be a "double-edged sword".

Due to the mixture of effects seen with caffeine, it is difficult to say how "good" or "bad" it is when emphasizing variables such as organismal lifespan. However, this finding presents an opportunity for caffeine to be exerting a beneficial effect on lifespan.
